Netflix is set to bring back a popular Norwegian disaster TV series with a sequel. The streamer has announced a new series based on the show, which currently holds a 100% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix announced La Palma sequel series set in the US

La Palma, which is currently ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 for non-English TV shows, will receive a miniseries sequel, titled Florida, reports Deadline. La Palma features Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. Other cast members include Alma Günther, Jenny Evensen, Anders Baasmo Christiansen, Amund Harboe, and more.

La Palma’s story is partly based on the 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption. A Norwegian family in the Canary Islands encounters chaos after researchers discover signs of an imminent volcanic eruption, which has the potential to trigger a destructive tsunami.

Meanwhile, Florida’s story will take place only hours after the volcanic eruption. It will focus on a Norwegian community in the U.S., still unaware of the incoming tsunami.

Written by Lars Gudmestad, the Netflix series is helmed by Cecilie Mosli (The Snow Sister). Expressing excitement for the sequel, Gudmestad said, “To be able to make Florida is a dream I have had for a long time, and I am very pleased that Netflix also believes in the project.”

Mosli added, “People confronted with crises are the most fascinating starting point for drama. With La Palma, Lars Gudmestad, Fantefilm, and Netflix demonstrated the power of combining large-scale disasters with intimate human stories, and I am very proud and happy to be part of the new project, Florida.”

Speaking more of the sequel TV show, Lasse Greve Alsos and Jan Eirik Langøen are serving as the producers. Greve Alsos is also executive producing alongside Martin Sundland.

Florida is expected to release at some point in 2027.
