Netflix’s surprise hit is ending early, but not because it ran its course.
The Night Agent has consistently received a strong critical reception since its first season premiered in 2023. It isn’t only one of Netflix’s biggest action thrillers, but also one of the streamer’s most popular shows in general. Despite the show’s success, however, the streaming giant announced that The Night Agent is ending with its upcoming fourth season — and that might actually be beneficial for the series.
The Night Agent is, without a doubt, a fan-favorite Netflix show and has secured an impressive spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list. Led by Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, the fast-paced thriller centers on a character who finds himself embroiled in a deadly conspiracy after answering an emergency phone call in the White House basement. The first two seasons were commercial hits and brought Netflix huge viewership numbers.
Why ending The Night Agent with Season 4 is actually a smart move for Netflix
Season 3 wasn’t a flop either and actually performed fairly well in its debut week. However, the numbers it accumulated couldn’t match what the first two seasons delivered. A report from What’s On Netflix showed that Season 3 dropped more than 30% compared to Seasons 1 and 2. That’s a significant decline compared to previous seasons, suggesting a drop in viewers’ interest despite the season performing well both critically and commercially.
That’s not to say future seasons may not be able to replicate the numbers of seasons 1 and 2, but considering the fate of other shows — even beyond Netflix — continuing The Night Agent indefinitely could eventually lead to burnout.
Series creator Shawn Ryan revealed in a statement (via Deadline) that he had always wanted to “eventually [deliver] a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey.” That in itself helps preserve the show’s reputation and its consistently strong critical reception. If Season 4 could manage to achieve both critical and commercial success, The Night Agent could end on a high note — and might go down in history as one of Netflix’s greatest shows without a weak, underwhelming season.
We can only assume it’s still not the end for The Night Agent, as Netflix could still embark on a spin-off within the show’s universe or return to where Peter Sutherland left off, perhaps in a movie. Fans, of course, can only hope.
