Obsession finally opens in theaters next week, and horror fans not lucky enough to catch the movie during its festival run can finally see what the fuss is about. The trailers have been creepy; the news that director Curry Barker has some exciting new projects in the works, including a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, has only heightened interest in this one. Today, Focus Features has shared a clip that’s just over a minute long—plenty of time to make us cringe in the best way possible.
For context, Bear (Michael Johnston) has long had a crush on Nikki (Inde Navarrette). She’s pretty, she’s cool, and she is definitely someone he wants to spend more time with. He breaks out of the friend zone with the help of what he thinks is just a silly novelty toy, hoping Nikki will fall for him—only to learn the powers of the “One Wish Willow” are entirely real. Very quickly, the situation distorts his romantic dreams into something terrifying.
This date, for instance: an onlooker might think Nikki’s making a scene at dinner when Bear asks her a painful question—except she seems almost possessed when she rises to respond. Her escalating reaction is not “normal upset”; it’s “dark forces are controlling me” upset, from the looks of it.
We’ll find out more about Bear and Nikki’s (presumably doomed?) relationship when Obsession hits theaters May 15.
