Earlier this week, Melissa Barrera gave a no-holds-barred interview talking about her firing from Scream 7 after she voiced support for Palestine on social media. We know she has no love for that particular horror franchise, but she’s not against the genre in general. In addition to starring in Scream 5 and Scream 6, she was also in Abigail and Your Monster. So it makes a lot of sense that her big-screen career is restarting with another scary tale.
As Variety reports, Barrera will play the main character in Inhabit, from writer-director Adam Alleca (Cell, Last House on the Left). The movie “follows a young woman who, following a traumatic, life-changing event, moves into a rundown apartment complex in search of a fresh start. When she’s terrorized by bizarre occurrences—unhinged neighbors, uncanny stalkers, unprovoked violence—she comes to believe she’s being targeted by a possessive force that breaks her understanding of reality.”
Alleca told the trade his inspirations include Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, and Get Out, and he teased that the film will force audiences to “confront a universal existential fear no one’s ever dared to tell a story about before.”
Barrera hasn’t exactly been sitting around since the Scream 7 controversy; she’s currently starring on Broadway in the Tony-nominated musical comedy Titanique. But Inhabit is the first new movie gig announced for her since it all went down—so you could call it a comeback of sorts.
