Mike Durrant was fired from Below Deck Down Under after the captain decided he could no longer tolerate Durrant’s disruptive behavior on board. Mike later reflected on the firing in a new interview. Initially, he insisted that he “didn’t do anything wrong” and blamed others for taking things too seriously. However, his perspective appears to have shifted since the incident took place months ago.
Mike Durant ‘understands’ his shock firing from Below Deck Down Under
Mike Durrant had previously said, “I don’t think I did anything wrong,” when the captain fired him from Below Deck Down Under. But looking back months after the actual events, Durant told Parade, “I hold more accountability in being like, OK, now it’s actually time to rein it in.”
In the latest episode of the show, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher had had enough of Mike’s antics, and Captain Jason Chambers fired him. This came after Mike jokingly insisted that he was actually the head of the department.
Mike’s previous issues on the show included revealing a guest’s secret and repeatedly teasing Stew Alesia Harris. Mike also frustrated Daisy and Second Officer João Franco.
During a confrontation, Daisy told Mike that he would be working until 9 p.m. that night, and Mike muttered, “We’ll see about that.” Mike now regrets saying this. “You know what, that was exactly the reaction I had,” he said. “In my head, it was more like I’m winding her up, but… that was actually probably worse than what I meant it to be… it was definitely out of order to speak to somebody like that.”
He added that removing him from the boat was the right choice.
After the altercation with Daisy, Captain Jason told Mike, “There’s a toxicity on board, and you’re the source. I won’t tolerate it. I need you to leave the boat today.”
Mike admitted that he understood the captain’s perspective. “So, of course, for Jason to have that mindset of Mike being toxic, then especially for a working environment, I agree.” Mike admitted that he had lost jobs before for being the class clown. However, he added, “The thing is, I can never change who I am.”
Mike further added, “I do feel like I made mistakes…It wasn’t the work hard, play hard. For me, it was like I wasn’t working hard, but I was playing hard. Sometimes your best pro also might be your best con… you’re sort of letting the rest of the team down.”
Speaking about the future, Mike added, “can’t change the past, but I can change the future.”
Below Deck Down Under airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST.
