In summary:
- Tech Advisor reports that Google appears to be developing a new smart display called the Google Home Display, featuring deep Gemini AI integration with potentially exclusive functionalities.
- References to this device were discovered in the Google Home app for iOS, suggesting active development following Google’s planned Home Speaker launch in spring 2026.
- This new display would be significant as Google’s first smart screen since the 2021 Nest Hub, potentially offering enhanced AI-powered home experiences.
Google Gemini’s mission of world domination is well underway and the firm may have a new smart display coming soon as part of it.
In case you haven’t noticed, Gemini (Google’s AI assistant) is launching on every device under the sun. Gemini for Home is a big part of that, now rolling out to a large range of Google Nest devices.
We already knew the Google Home Speaker was on the way as a next-generation device – it’s due spring 2026, so any day now, though a specific release date is yet to be announced – but hints in code suggest a second model is coming.
Aaron, an analyst at MacRumors, has spotted mentions of the Google Home Display in a list of devices in the Google Home app for iOS.
We don’t have any more information, but it makes total sense beyond matching the branding of the Google Home Speaker (below).
The last of Google’s Nest Hub smart displays were launched years ago – the Next Hub (gen 2) being the most recent way back in 2021.
In addition, Google Home Chief Product Officer Anish Kattukaran mentioned back in October that the smart display is the “ultimate form factor to be able to deliver a really great home experience”, meaning it would be silly if the company wasn’t working on a new model.
While Google may not be trying to reinvent the category as the Nest Hubs were all very good, there are still improvements that can be made and you can bet Gemini will be a headline feature.
It’s possible the Google Home Display will have exclusive features not available on Gemini running on the older Nest Hubs.
As to when we’ll find out more, it could be very soon. Google’s I/O developer conference kicks off next week on 19 May so we’ll be keeping an eye out for the new smart screen along with a release date for the new speaker.
