‘I Love Boosters’ Free Gas Giveaway Announced in L.A.

Gas prices are hell, and everyone knows it. That’s why Neon’s “I Love Boosters,” from the legendary indie auteur Boots Riley, is sending stars Keke Palmer and LaKeith Stanfield to help the people out. Ahead of the May 22 theatrical release of Riley’s long-awaited return to filmmaking, “I Love Boosters” is taking its anti-capitalist energy directly to the pump.

IndieWire can exclusively reveal that Palmer and Stanfield will personally refuel cars during a “boosted” gas giveaway happening tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12, at 10 a.m. PT. Drivers can find the stars at the Shell station located at 8500 West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The first 70 cars in line will receive free gas courtesy of the film and its ambassadors, with merch also being handed out on-site while supplies last. Following the cult impact of “Sorry to Bother You” and Riley’s acclaimed Prime Video series “I’m a Virgo,” anticipation for “I Love Boosters” has been building steadily ever since its SXSW premiere.

Word of mouth around the film is spreading fast, with the movie opening the 2026 Seattle International Film Festival just last week. That’s just the latest in a string of high-profile showcases for a buzzy press tour that’s put Riley’s latest take on revolutionary politics at the top of nearly every cinephiles’ mind this spring.

In his review out of SXSW, IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio called the movie “the first socialist stoner movie of the Trump era,” praising Palmer, Naomi Ackie, and Taylour Paige as “three comic geniuses totally attuned to Riley’s weird rhythms and absurdist world-building.” Lattanzio also described the film as “a shoplifting comedy without any pros at the helm,” where professional boosters treat stealing luxury goods and redistributing them at lower prices as “community service.”

That ethos makes tomorrow’s giveaway strangely ideal marketing. In 2026, one of the most radical things you can do for somebody might just be paying for a goddamn tank of gas. (Bonus points if you make them drive you to the movies!)

“I Love Boosters” also stars Poppy Liu, Eiza González, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, and Demi Moore. NEON releases the film exclusively in theaters on May 22. Watch the trailer below:
