Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s adaptation of The Odyssey, giving audiences the clearest look yet at the star-studded cast and the fight driving the ancient epic to the big screen.

The Odyssey debuts stunning new trailer

Charlize Theron opens the sneak peek as the nymph Calypso, asking Matt Damon’s Odysseus a deceptively simple question about what he remembers. His answer cuts to the emotional core of the story: he remembers Penelope, his wife, and Telemachus, his son. That bond anchors what the trailer then reveals as a story operating on two fronts simultaneously.

While Odysseus battles mythical threats on his journey home, the danger in Ithaca has already been unleashed. Robert Pattinson’s Antinous takes up as a power-hungry suitor determined to seize the vacant throne. His scheming pits him directly against Tom Holland’s Telemachus, who, as the trailer for The Odyssey shows, struggles to defend his mother’s household against a rising tide of usurpers.

The trailer does not linger solely on palace intrigue. One sequence shows Damon’s Odysseus locked in combat with the Cyclops. Jon Bernthal appears as King Menelaus, shown mid-roar as the Trojan War concludes. It moves swiftly between intimate character beats and massive set pieces, consistent with Christopher Nolan’s established visual language.

Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, though she appears only fleetingly. Two major cast members remain absent from The Odyssey’s new trailer. Zendaya, cast as the goddess Athena, does not appear. Further, Lupita Nyong’o’s role also continues to be withheld by the studio. The cast further includes Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, and Jovan Adepo.

Nolan wrote and produced the film alongside Emma Thomas. Universal Pictures is handling distribution for the director’s 13th feature, which is also the first narrative film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. It is going to be released on July 17, 2026.
