Guy Ritchie just revealed why Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal were the perfect match for his latest spy thriller. The director opened up about the dynamic behind the stars’ new collaboration and why the reunion made complete sense for In the Grey.
Guy Ritchie on Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal making his life easy
According to ScreenRant, director Guy Ritchie explained why reuniting with Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill felt natural for In the Grey.
Ritchie said, “Offscreen, they get on very well, which makes my life very easy. Outside of that, they have the requisite skill set that I need.” He added, “They enjoy working with each other, they’re great fun to work with, and that’s really it.”
Ritchie also discussed how familiarity with actors improved communication during filming. He stated, “Once you develop a shorthand with an actor, communication becomes much easier.” Furthermore, he explained, “Obviously, I know [Jake and Henry] very well, and I know Eiza pretty well.”
The director said production moved smoothly because the cast shared the same creative understanding. Ritchie noted, “The communication was quite easy on set because they understood the MO, and we were pretty much on the same page about what our mission was.” He also said, “It was great fun to make, and they’re all great to work with.”
In the Grey, Ritchie reunites with actors from several previous projects. Gyllenhaal previously worked with Ritchie on The Covenant. Meanwhile, Cavill collaborated with the filmmaker on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
The film also stars Eiza González, marking another reunion with Ritchie and Cavill. Additionally, In the Grey represents the first major movie pairing between Gyllenhaal and Cavill. Both actors previously built experience through action-focused productions and espionage stories.
The story follows two extraction specialists navigating operations between legal and illegal worlds while recovering stolen billions. Early footage has drawn comparisons to Ritchie’s earlier crime and spy thrillers.
In the Grey releases in theaters on May 15, 2026, with a runtime of 98 minutes.
